In 2021, the Carnival Victory received a massive transformation that resulted in it being renamed and reclassified as a Sunshine Class ship. This ship originally entered service in 1999 as the former Destiny Class ship named the Carnival Triumph. In 2019 the Carnival Triumph received an incredible $200 million transformation that resulted in it being renamed and also reclassified as a Sunshine Class ship. Mardi Gras made history by being the first ship in North America to run on Liquified Natural Gas (LNG).

The decor here is a little darker, but the expanded size and proximity to a pool, hot tubs and outdoor seating are a definite plus. The deli, pizza and Guy's barbecue eateries are all on Deck 8, with a third ice cream outlet in the Heroes Tribute Bar. The only issue with this arrangement is that neither of these spots are big on vegetables; you can no longer get a salad at the pizza venue. If you want some greens with your pizza or turkey sandwich, you have to travel seven decks to the Lido Marketplace. Thrill chasers will flock to the Ultimate Playground to get their hearts pounding. Here, the Bolt roller coaster, the second in the fleet, zooms over the mini-golf course and around the water park and ship's funnel.

Carnival Cruise Line will welcome Carnival Firenze to the Fun Ship fleet after the vessel completes her last sailing for Costa Cruises and undergoes weeks of transformation and renovation. Carnival Firenze will begin sailing from Long Beach, California in April 2024. Calypso Lagoon, just to the west, is home to the sport court, the freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. The adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options. In July 2025, Carnival Glory is scheduled to be one of the first ships to offer visits to Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination on Grand Bahama island.
Guests enter through the atrium in Celebration Central, with a ceiling designed to mimic a confetti cannon, courtesy of roughly 1,400 colorful light fixtures. This is especially true if you have a group that wants to eat together but has differing opinions about which casual venues each person wants to hit. It can be a pain to have to venture to a different area of the ship to grab food when your friends and family are looking at other dining options closer to the pool.
At another show I attended solo, I found a lone seat in the stadium-style section of banquettes between decks 7 and 8. Even in this area clearly meant for show watching, I could not see all the action, and the noise from passengers wandering around Deck 8 and coming in and out of Bonsai Sushi was loud and distracting. One of my favorite things about Carnival is that the line's ships offer a diversity of casual, included dining venues. New with the Excel class is Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken venue serving variations on the fried-chicken-and-biscuit theme from breakfast through the late afternoon.
Made up of the largest ships in the fleet, the class also includes the 2020-built Mardi Gras and the 2022-built Carnival Celebration. This new addition, which will span approximately 344 meters and boast a gross tonnage of around 180,000, is set to enhance the cruising experience for over 6,400 guests. Mardi Gras was a huge hit for Carnival Cruise Line in 2021, leading the cruise line to build sister ships Carnival Celebration in 2022 and Carnival Jubilee in 2023. Cunard Line will also welcome Queen Anne in May 2024, the first new ship for the iconic cruise line since Queen Elizabeth debuted in 2010. At this time, no new ships are on order for any other line of Carnival Corporation, including Carnival Cruise Line. The hotel director told me that it takes around six months for a new ship to be running like clockwork.
The Excel-class ship is named the Carnival Jubilee and will be delivered to Galveston, Texas, where it will sail seven-day, western Caribbean trips, according to Carnival. But the ship also offers some of the first real suites in the fleet, featuring separate living room and bedroom areas, bathrooms with separate tubs and showers, and walk-in closets. Passengers have to make their way to the lounge, which isn't next to the theater. The regular battery of daily programming — trivia, game shows, pool games, etc. — also wasn't offered since there were no passengers.
