After working up an appetite from a heated round of bocce, Cody’s doesn’t have a kitchen but does invite you to bring your own food and propane to barbeque on their Grill Master. We did this once at a going away party and it worked out beautifully, although we found you’ll want to get your grilling done before it gets dark as it gets hard to tell when you’re food is done in the dim lighting. Cody’s beer garden at has been recently updated and remodeled for the summer. Known to have one of the greatest outdoor bars in Chicago, the most important aspect of Cody’s has not changed.

Former owner Gene Frankowski purchased the bar in 1986 and ran it for over 30 years as Cody’s Public House, named after his dog, until closing in 2019. Frankowski sold the building to Red Door Tavern Group (The Graystone Tavern, The Rambler Kitchen + Tap) in September 2021, who promised to honor the bar’s history with restorations of its elements while adding updated amenities. Cocktails include the Black Manhattan with Piggyback Rye Whiskey, Amaro Montenegro, bitters, orange bitters and brandied cherry; an old fashioned with Pink Hook Bourbon, Angostura bitters and simple syrup with an orange twist; and an espresso martini.

That’s why when Gene Frankowski, who opened Cody’s in 1986, closed the bar in 2019, Bagley set his sights on giving Cody’s new life. Red Door Tavern Group, which operates other bars like the Graystone Tavern and the Rambler Kitchen + Tap, bought the bar’s building this September and reopened Cody’s in December with updated amenities. Bagley’s team also installed a state-of-the-art tap system featuring 16 beers on draft, as opposed to the 12 offered in Cody’s.

Watch out for the German Shepherd-Husky-coyote mix of a dog that romps through dart games in progress and kicks up a fuss until petted. Those were replaced with larger windows for better ventilation, Bagley said. Farm-style siding was added to the outside of the building, and a fresh coat of dark green paint was added inside. The bar’s authentic tin ceiling has been repainted copper, and the original backbar sconces have been repurposed as pendant lights, Bagley said. Its pool table and jukebox have also been upgraded, while the two dart boards and artwork have been cleaned and polished.
Like Resi’s Bierstube and Grizzly’s Lodge, Cody’s has an impressive beer garden for a neighborhood joint. You’d never know it unless you’ve been there, read about or known someone who’s been there as you can’t really see it from the street. Access to it can be had through the white door at the north end of the main barroom. When you walk out you’ll find a couple of tables on a wooden porch and more on the cement patio.
